Treating TMJ with Botox®

Treating TMJ with Botox®

Non-surgical facial sculpting at Medi-Sculpt.

(TMJ) Temporomandibular joint disorder : A disorder of the temporomandibular joint(s) that causes pain, usually in front of the ear(s), sometimes in the form of a headache.

Repetitive behaviours such as clenching, gum chewing, fingernail biting, or stress, lead to hypertrophy or enlargement of the masseter muscle which is the main muscle used for chewing.

The enlargement of the masseter muscle along with its repetitive spasms can cause a severe or chronic inflammation of the joint resulting in TMJ.

Botox® relieves jaw tension by keeping the muscles from engaging in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.

YOUR WELL-BEING HANDLED BY BOTOX

We knew Botox® worked wonders on crow’s feet and forehead lines amongst other signs of ageing but recently,

Botox® has become an increasingly popular TMJ treatment.

Indeed, it offers fast and long-lasting relief for TMJ disorders that have not responded well to alternative options.

Thanks to Botox®, TMJ sufferers who come to Medi-Sculpt are able to experience:

  • Elimination of headaches caused by night-time grinding.
  • Minimisation of lockjaw.
  • Reduced discomfort when using the jaw.
  • Reduced shoulder and neck pain.
  • Substantially reduced jaw tension.

If you would also like to enjoy the benefits of Botox® and keep jaw pain at bay, phone my rooms on 0861 003 007 to book your consultation!

Why do we call it “Face Sculpting?”

Because of their overly active jaw muscles, some of my patients wish to soften the very square shape of their face.

This procedure is a highly successful, non-invasive way to beautifully contour the lower face to create a slimmer, more feminine jawline.

Injecting Botox® in these muscles can reduce their size and give a square face a much more curved, smooth and approachable appearance.

THE BOTOX® FOR TMJ PROCEDURE

The length of the Botox® treatment procedure depends on the number of injections needed which I will determine, depending on the degree of your TMJ disorder(s). But at Medi-Sculpt, this procedure is usually completed within 10-30 minutes.

Additional injections may be made in the temples and forehead depending on your symptoms.

I administer Botox® injections at the Medi-Sculpt rooms and you can go back to your normal activities straight after, there is no downtime! This means you can undergo the treatment during your lunch break before returning to work.

Most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week.

The Botox® for TMJ treatments is not painful. My patients usually report a brief and mild prick. But if this is something that you are worried about, I can, of course, apply topical cream for your optimal comfort.  At Medi-Sculpt, we want to be absolutely certain that we do everything possible to make your experience with us as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR BOTOX® FOR TMJ TREATMENT?

After I have injected the Botox®, the muscle ache will begin to disappear. My patients love the relief gained and the absence of tension. After the treatment, you will be able to return to your normal activities but I usually advise my patients to avoid vigorous activity for 24 hours post-treatment. Like with all treatments involving injectables, it may take several days to feel the full benefits of the treatment.

The effects of such Botulinum Toxin treatments usually last for 6-12 months, depending on the individual and sometimes longer if 2 treatments are given within 4 months.

After your Botox® for TMJ treatment you will be able to speak, eat and bite just like you used to. Only the areas injected with Botox will be “relaxed.” The only major and most important change is the reduction in pain and discomfort.

Will Botox® cure TMJ?

You will begin to see results from your Botox® treatment 4-7 days following your procedure. And the effects of the treatment last for about 6months.

After 2-3 Botox® treatments, the masseter muscle often begins to atrophy or shrink and many patients will lose the habit which they had formed with the repetitive grinding or clenching of the jaw.

I hope you enjoyed this and learnt a thing or two about TMJ treatment with Botox®!? If you are sick and tired of the pain caused by your TMJ, simply call Medi-Sculpt on 0861 003 007 and arrange a consultation with me to see if Botox® treatment is right for you.
